DHS tells why Massachusetts attorney and US citizen Nicole Micheroni got an email asking her to self-deport: CBP sent the email as ...

Immigration attorney Nicole Micheroni received a shocking email from DHS ordering her to "Self-Deport Immediately," despite being a US citizen. DHS confirmed the email was sent in error due to the CBP One app's notification system, which may have used non-personal email addresses provided by migrants. Micheroni clarified that parole revocation isn't deportation and advised seeking legal counsel.
DHS tells why Massachusetts attorney and US citizen Nicole Micheroni got an email asking her to self-deport: CBP sent the email as ...
A US citizen and immigration attorney, Nicole Micheroni, recently received what she termed as shocking email from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) ordering her to “Self-Deport Immediately”. Avcording to a report in The Boston Globe reported, the email had the subject line “Notification of Termination of Parole” but didnt have any client name or case number in it. Micheroni, a partner at Cameron Micheroni & Silvia in Massachusetts, initially assumed it was meant for a client. “It took me a couple of minutes to realize it was sent to me instead of someone I represent,” she told the Globe. The email warned, “DHS is terminating your Parole. Do not attempt to remain in the United States—the federal government will find you.”
Twelve-year immigration law veteran Micheroni said it was unclear why the DHS sent her the email, stating that clients usually submit their own IDs for updates. Also, the fact that she is herself an American citizen, therefore cannot be Deported under any law/circumstance.

DHS statement on Nicole Micheroni getting 'Self-deport immediately' email

DHS later confirmed that a notice was sent to Micheroni by mistake. A Customs and Border Protection spokesperson released a statement regarding the letter Micheroni received, which said that notifications may have reached unintended recipients if a non-personal email, such as that of a US citizen contact, was provided. "CBP used the known email addresses of the alien to send notifications. If a non-personal email—such as an American citizen contact—was provided by the alien, notices may have been sent to unintended recipients. CBP is monitoring communications and will address any issues on a case-by-case basis.”

CBP One App’s Role in Parole Program

The incident connects to the CBP One app, introduced near the end of Donald Trump’s first term to help customs brokers schedule inspections and allow short-term visa holders to extend stays. Under the former President Biden, the app’s use expanded to manage migrant parole, granting a two-year stay and work authorization while awaiting case hearings. Following Doald Trump’s January 20, 2025, inauguration, CBP is said to have started canceling migrant appointments at the Mexico border, effectively halting the parole program’s operations.

Nicole Micheroni Clarifies Immigration Parole

Micheroni used the incident to educate the public on immigration parole via a BlueSky thread. “Revocation of parole isn’t the same as a deportation order, and this email does not initiate deportation proceedings,” she wrote. With 12 years of legal experience, she urged anyone receiving similar notices to consult an immigration lawyer immediately, emphasizing that legal options may still be available.
