Bicholim: An earth mover digging a road to lay a water pipeline, damaged an older pipeline at Sanquelim on Tuesday, leading to the wastage of lakhs of litres of water. As a result, Gokulwadi at Sanquelim faced a water shortage.
The work of laying a new and larger water pipeline in the Sanquelim municipal area is under way on a war footing. The excavator accidentally cracked the older pipeline in front of a petrol pump.
As the water started flowing onto the road, vehicles — especially two-wheelers — were confronted by a challenging sludge.
A large fountain was created at the leakage spot due to the high pressure of the water. The water supply department halted the flow to taps briefly to fix the leakage.
Altaf Agha, a junior engineer of the department, supervised the repairs on the water pipeline.
Corporator Riyaz Khan said the ruptured water pipeline affected supply at the Sanquelim market area, Mujawarwada, and the surroundings.
