Comedian Mo'Nique has landed in hot water after making controversial remarks about longtime friend Shannon Sharpe during a recent comedy show. Her comments, made amid Sharpe's ongoing $50 million legal battle, have drawn intense criticism from social media users and fans alike.
Mo’Nique jokes about Sharpe’s legal troubles during comedy tour appearance
Mo’Nique, a seasoned stand-up comedian and Oscar-winning actress, sparked outrage during a stop on Katt Williams’ “Heaven on Earth” tour in Columbia, South Carolina. In a moment caught on camera, she referenced Shannon Sharpe’s ongoing legal troubles involving sexual assault allegations, telling the crowd, "Yes, I told that n-gga Shannon Sharpe [to] leave them white b-tches alone."
The joke referred to Sharpe’s relationship with a woman who recently filed a $50 million lawsuit against him, accusing the former NFL player of repeated abuse over a two-year period. The comment didn’t sit well with many, especially given the gravity of the accusations against Sharpe.
Fans accuse Mo’Nique of taking a ‘victory lap’ over Sharpe’s pain
Social media users were quick to express their disapproval, calling Mo'Nique's remarks tasteless and insensitive. One user wrote, "Taking a victory lap while your friend is going through something serious is absolutely insane."
"She's weird, bruh," a user replied to the video. "Monique is not at her best when she waxes on others' troubles when she has enough of her own," another user commented. "Shannon supported her by allowing her a platform, and Monique disparages him in the court of public opinion. She's a gutter snipe.”.
Many pointed out that Sharpe had previously given Mo’Nique a chance to speak candidly on his podcast, Club Shay Shay, where she had already expressed concern about his dating habits. In that appearance, she warned him about dating much younger women, saying:
"You don't need no 26-year-old girl; you don't need no 36-year-old girl... You’re trying to hang out with these young b-tches. You can’t do it, Shannon!"
As the lawsuit continues to unfold, Sharpe has stepped down temporarily from his ESPN role on First Take. The allegations include disturbing audio where he reportedly threatened to "choke" the accuser. Despite the backlash, Sharpe maintains his innocence, stating:
"The relationship in question was 100% consensual."
