Nissan’s Oliver Rowland continued his stellar run by clinching victory at the Tokyo E-Prix, moving just inches closer to being crowned Formula E world champion. The 32-year-old Briton took pole position and converted it into a commanding win—his fourth of the season—solidifying his grip on the championship.
Oliver Rowland wins Tokyo E-Prix Round 9
Oliver Rowland led the race from start to finish, showcasing complete control and strategic brilliance. He finished ahead of Pascal Wehrlein, who secured second place, while Dan Ticktum claimed his maiden Formula E podium with a third-place finish. Ticktum capitalized on Taylor Barnard’s late crash to seal a memorable result.
The race was both thrilling and chaotic. Of the 21 starters, several high-profile drivers faced misfortune. Notably, Mitch Evans’ Jaguar was ruled out before the race due to a qualifying crash at Turn 16. Meanwhile, Antonio Felix da Costa retired early following suspension damage to his Porsche, triggering yellow flags and briefly halting proceedings.
Racing resumed on Lap 13, with Rowland continuing to assert dominance. On Lap 10, he was the only driver in the top 10 with the full eight minutes of attack mode remaining—further underlining his control over the race.
At the end of Lap 12, Ticktum led momentarily ahead of Wehrlein and Barnard, but Rowland soon reclaimed his position.
The chaos unfolded as Rowland managed his energy levels in the closing stages, while Taylor Barnard’s race came to a premature end after he crashed into the barriers on Lap 29. Despite the drama, Rowland powered through to take the chequered flag in style.
Behind the podium finishers, Jake Dennis claimed fourth place, with Lucas di Grassi in fifth. Jean-Éric Vergne, Nick Cassidy, Sam Bird—who also set the fastest lap—Sébastien Buemi, and Maximilian Günther rounded out the top 10.
