Maruti Suzuki India’s share in the domestic passenger vehicle (PV) market dropped below the 40 per cent mark in April 2025, while Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) surged ahead to become the second-largest player, according to data released by the Federation of Automotive Dealers Associations (FADA).
Long-standing second-place holder Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) slid to fourth position, as Tata Motors held steady in third place.
Total PV retail sales in India reached 3,49,939 units in April 2025, a marginal increase of 1.55 per cent compared to 3,44,594 units in April 2024, FADA reported.
Maruti Suzuki’s retail sales fell slightly to 1,38,021 units in April 2025, down from 1,39,173 units in the same month last year. This translated to a market share decline from 40.39 per cent in April 2024 to 39.44 per cent this year.
In full-year terms, the company recorded retail sales of 16,71,559 units in FY25 with a 40.25 per cent market share, compared to 16,08,041 units and 40.6 per cent share in FY24.
The month’s standout performer was Mahindra & Mahindra, driven by robust SUV demand. M&M recorded retail sales of 48,405 units in April 2025, giving it a market share of 13.83 per cent—up from 11.23 per cent (38,696 units) in April 2024, when it ranked fourth.

For FY25, M&M posted total retail sales of 5,12,626 units and held a 12.34 per cent market share, up from 4,27,390 units and 10.79 per cent in FY24.
Hyundai, which traditionally held the number two position, dropped to fourth in April with retail sales of 43,642 units and a 12.47 per cent market share—down from 49,243 units and 14.29 per cent a year earlier.
Over FY25, HMIL recorded retail sales of 5,59,149 units, securing a 13.46 per cent market share. This compares to 5,62,865 units and 14.21 per cent market share in FY24.
Tata Motors retained third place with April retail sales of 44,065 units, translating to a 12.59 per cent market share. In April 2024, it had sold 46,915 units, with a 13.61 per cent market share.
For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, Tata Motors recorded 5,35,960 units in retail sales and a 12.9 per cent market share, compared to 5,39,567 units and 13.62 per cent in FY24.
