Bumpin’ was American jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery’s first album on famous Verve label (famous because its impressive roster of stars included Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Billie Holiday, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Smokey Robinson, Sarah McLachlan, Diana Krall, Wayne Shorter, John Scofield and more) and it was also the first time he teamed up with arranger/conductor Don Sebesky (the album, incidentally, is heavy on string instruments and compositions).

@TOIEntertain Sebesky reportedly came up with the idea to have Montgomery and the backing band record the tracks in the studio, after which the strings were added on to embellish what was already recorded. The album is, by and large, a nice accompaniment to a romantic evening. Montgomery’s precise guitar and its subtle tonalities mesh perfectly with the orchestral maneouvres in the dark.

'A Quiet Thing' embodies the combination of Montgomery’s six-string wizardry along with the smokey beauty of Sebesky’s compositions.

The Times of India Entertainment 'The Shadow Of Your Smile' is a bossa nova track that shines and also benefits well from the guitar-string pairing. As does
'Here’s That Rainy Day', which is particularly mood-enhancing when listened to — as the title suggests — on a rainy day. Other than that, title track
Bumpin’ is jaunty enough and
'My One And Only Love', which is probably the most romantic cut on the album. Essential soul jazz listening. And quite enjoyable too!
