'Some people want to set Bengal on fire': Abhishek Banerjee on West Bengal violence

NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday urged people to maintain peace in West Bengal amid ongoing protests following the Waqf Amendment Bill passage in parliament.
He warned against those attempting to create unrest in the state through religious division, while also addressing the SSC recruitment scam and criticizing the BJP government's approach towards Bengal.
Violence has erupted in various cities including Jangipur and Murshidabad, creating tension in the region following the bill's passage.
"Some people want to set Bengal on fire. We should maintain peace and not fall prey to rumours... Many people are trying to create unrest in Bengal by sowing seeds of division in the name of religion. I appeal to everyone today to maintain peace and preserve Bengal's legacy of harmony. We should all be alert and aware. Some people want Bengal to burn," Banerjee said.
Speaking about the SSC recruitment scam, Banerjee expressed respect for the Supreme Court's decision while maintaining his right to criticize the judgment.
"We respect the Supreme Court and have faith in it. However, we have the right to criticise the judgement. I feel this verdict reflects the BJP's consistent step-motherly attitude towards Bengal. Why am I saying this? They had blocked the MGNREGA funds of 59 lakh job cardholders. They even blocked the Awas funds due to some discrepancies. Action should be taken against the undeserving ones. However, just for a few undeserving candidates, the jobs of thousands of people cannot be taken away..." Banerjee stated.
He accused the Union Government of blocking MGNREGA funds for 59 lakh job cardholders, highlighting what he described as discriminatory treatment towards West Bengal.
The situation remains tense in West Bengal as protests continue in response to the parliamentary passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill.
