Nate Diaz has never been your typical fighter. From his relentless cardio to his signature Stockton Slaps, the former UFC star built his reputation on being unpredictable, unfiltered, and undeniably entertaining. But what many saw as a taunt or a show of disrespect, Diaz insists was often just part of his fighting style—sometimes even unintentional. In a career filled with thrilling fights and unforgettable moments, the 39-year-old has now opened up about why he used the slap so often and how, in certain cases, it was the only way he could land a clean shot.

The Stockton Slap: More Than Just a Signature Move

In an interview with Full Violence, Nate Diaz explained the true purpose behind his famous slap, revealing that it wasn’t always about humiliating his opponents—it was about making contact.

“I slapped a lot of those f——,” Diaz admitted. “I liked when I slapped Leon Edwards, when I slap someone and then crack someone. I was like wack, boom.”

The Stockton native also shared a particularly satisfying moment from his legendary rivalry with Conor McGregor. “Conor’s f—— a–, remember, I slapped him. When he was hitting me and running and s—. I smacked him. You just got slapped. That was funny.”

But while many of his slaps appeared to be part of his signature trash-talking approach, Diaz insists that some of them weren’t planned at all. In fact, they happened naturally when his opponents avoided his punches.

“A lot of times, it’s not intentional,” he explained. “Sometimes, you’re getting out the way of my punch. I throw a hook, and you move your head back, and I just miss, so when I do that, I open my hand, I’m like ‘Gotchu motherf—–.”

Diaz’s legendary UFC career was full of iconic moments, but none stand out quite like his shocking submission win over Conor McGregor at UFC 196 in 2016. In a fight that many expected McGregor to dominate, Diaz stunned the world with a second-round rear-naked choke. And, as it turns out, he had foreshadowed the whole thing before it even happened.

While Diaz has since moved on from the UFC, his impact on the sport remains undeniable. His unfiltered personality, fearless fighting style, and ability to deliver unforgettable moments have cemented his place as one of MMA’s most beloved figures. Whether intentional or not, the Stockton Slap is now a legendary part of his legacy.
