In a time when unexpected videos quickly grab public attention, one late-night CCTV clip from Tamil Nadu is doing just that, without any noise or chaos. A leopard casually walking into a police station might sound like a scene from a wildlife documentary, but it actually happened at the Naduvattam Police Station in the Nilgiris. And while the leopard’s surprise visit could have easily shaken anyone, it was the calm and quick thinking of one officer that truly stood out.
CCTV visuals from inside the police station show the leopard walking in through the corridor and calmly moving across rooms, almost as if it were inspecting the premises. It didn’t roar or attack. Instead, the animal appeared unusually composed, spending a few moments inside before silently stepping back out into the night.
Moments after the leopard walked out of one of the rooms, a policeman was seen carefully stepping out to check if it had gone. His quiet, alert response– peeking through the door and then gently trying to shut it– caught everyone's attention. Though he fumbled a bit, likely out of nervousness, he managed to lock the door securely. This small but brave moment quickly became the highlight online.
Watch the video here: According to a report presented by Hindustan Times, the video gained attention after Supriya Sahu, Tamil Nadu’s Additional Chief Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forests, shared it on social media and praised the officer for his response.
“A leopard decided to inspect the Naduvattam Police Station in Nilgiris. Hats off to the police officer on duty who calmly closed the door and called the forest officials. No one was hurt. Leopard went back safely to the forest,” she wrote.
In her tweet, she confirmed that the situation was handled responsibly– forest officials were informed right away, and the leopard safely made its way back to the wild. As the video spread online, people reacted with admiration and even a bit of humour, amused by the rare and unexpected visit.
One user wrote: “Must admire the policeman's composure, as he made a few casual attempts to lock the door, as if a cat is wandering around.” Another commented: “The police personnel were so calm and collected. That’s why, thankfully, that went well.” A third user playfully added: “How unfair to not take the complaint of the poor animal and close the door on it? How many such humans more graceful than him must have visited your station?”
The officer’s calm, instinctive response– cautious yet composed– stood in sharp contrast to what could have been a chaotic situation.
Though rare, such incidents highlight the reality of life near protected forests. In areas like the Nilgiris, wildlife sightings are not uncommon, emphasizing the delicate balance between nature and human spaces.
